The video is an attempt to explain the early universe through the lens of an art historian. The universe used various techniques when it was in its young and violent stage to produce the Cosmic Microwave Background, a surface describing the temperature of the universe when light particles scattered off each other for the last time. Upon examining how the universe created a surface of almost uniform temperature, we come to a theory of inflation, which describes rapid exponential expansion of space in the earliest fractions of seconds in the universe. We now understand that quantum fluctuations at those early stages produced temperature and density variations that grew into galaxies, planets, and us.
John Staunton is a senior undergraduate at Columbia College majoring in physics. He wants to study gravity and its effects in black holes and the early universe in graduate school.
